THE PONTIFICAL SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL

PHOTO Gallery “Our Lady of the Cloud”

The Ecuadorian community in New York City holds an annual mass in honor of “Our Lady of the Cloud” on January 1, with hymns, devotions and Mass beginning at 12 noon. Our Lady of the Cloud is an especial devotion to the Ecuadorian community, although She is embraced by all Latin Americans.

The devotion dates back to 1692, when the Virgin Mary appeared to pilgrims praying for the health of their bishop who was gravely ill. Over 500 people witnessed the apparition on the outskirts of Quito (Ecuador). The bishop spontaneously recovered and lived to 1702. Testimonies were recorded and remain in the Cathedral archives to this day. Ecuadorian immigrants to New York City brought the devotion with them in 1986 and continue strongly to this day. Excerpts from the 20th Anniversary magazine are pictured, detailing the history of our beautiful Lady of the Cloud.
