The atmosphere of the Last Supper was extremely dramatic: the high priestly prayer of Jesus, the washing of the feet of the Apostles, the announcement of betrayal, and the farewell speech. All this went beyond human categories of cognition and action. The apostles - by God's grace - seemed to understand that by eating the Bread and Wine that had become Body and Blood, they participated in an extraordinary way in the life and death of Jesus, and at the same time they agreed to take up the way of life that was His participation - life devoted to the Father and offered for men. The mystery of the Cenacle goes further: there the Risen Jesus will meet his disciples many times (cf. Jn 20:19,26; Acts 1:13). Choosing this place will be - by the will of Christ himself - the task of making this Event of Passion, Death and Resurrection present "until the end of the world." In every generation - starting with the Apostles - Jesus teaches us the mystery of uniting man with God. The basic dimension of this mystery is the awareness of the presence, closeness and love of God, who is the Father. Man's response is to be expressed in trusting submission to this love.

Experiencing the mystery of man's relationship with God in the second stage focuses on the person of Jesus Christ. He, who is the only Mediator of salvation, prays in us to the Father through his Spirit and sacrifices himself. Jesus, through his life - words and actions interconnected - teaches us to read and implement the Father's plan so that "no one perishes except the son of perdition." As the Eternal, Only Begotten Son, entering the depth of God's love, Jesus gives everything to the Father and directs everything towards the Father. Let us recall again the words from the Letter of St. John the Apostle: "We also have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world. If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God." A deep and beautiful illustration of this dimension of prayer and union is a painting by the contemporary Italian painter Carlo Parisi, entitled: "Christo in meditazione". Jesus is shown with his head slightly tilted forward, supported by his hands clasped in prayer. The mystery of this image is contained in the closed eyes of Christ, which lead "into Himself" - which means that they "see" and consider "the affairs and plans of the Father." By looking carefully at this image, we better understand the words of Jesus' prayer: "Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, so that they may be one, just as we are.

El ambiente de la Última Cena fue sumamente dramático: la oración sacerdotal de Jesús, el lavatorio de los pies de los Apóstoles, el anuncio de la traición y el discurso de despedida. Spiritual Communion is an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament and lovingly embrace him at a time or in circumstances when one cannot receive Him in sacramental Communion. The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Mass. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our desire to receive sacramental Communion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily.

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, Come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Durante mucho tiempo ha sido un entendimiento católico que cuando las circunstancias impiden que uno reciba la Sagrada Comunión, es posible realizar un Acto de Comunión Espiritual, que es una fuente de gracia. La comunión espiritual es un deseo ardiente de recibir a Jesús en el Santísimo Sacramento y abrazarlo con amor en un momento o circunstancias en las que uno no puede recibirlo en la comunión sacramental.
